Genres and Formats
Genres and Formats
It would seem that most things that people think of as genres
are not that at all but in fact pretty arbitrary categories. Truly there are but two genres: Fiction and
Nonfiction. Each of these two can be
further divided into several subgenre.
Two basic subgenre of Fiction are Realism and Fantasy. Each of these could also be further
subdivided. Nonfiction also has subgenre
such as Narrative Nonfiction, Expository Nonfiction, and Biography.
Format is the way the literature is presented. Examples include:
-
Poetry - Chapter Book -Short Story
-
Novel - Picture Book -Graphic Novel
-
Drama
This
information makes me think about librarians I have heard of separating their
libraries by genre. This didn’t make a
lot of sense to me before, but makes even less sense now. Every library is separated by genre! Good old Dewey already did that for us. Further, many books can’t be so easily classified
or span multiple categories. It would be
very hard to place those in a library that has been separated into
categories. What I think would be a
better Idea, is creating displays of books highlighting different
categories. This way different types of
books could be shown, but without making the library harder to navigate.
