George.
Gino, A. (2015) George. New York, NY: Scholastic
Press
George is a 4th grader
boy who feels he is a girl. Though he
considers himself a girl, it is a secret he holds within. The 4th grade classes are
performing Charlotte’s Web as a play ,and he knows he wants to play charlotte. He is rejected though, his teacher believing
it a joke. So his best friend Kelly
hatches a plan to get him not only playing Charlotte, but finally revealing his
secret to his family.
I see how this book could help
people having similar issues, or help people to understand transgender
children. For me, it was a bit hard to
read. I felt it was sending mixed
messages. The back cover says “Be who
you are”. I feel he isn’t really doing that though. He even changes his name to Melissa by the
end. I did like how he dealt with the
bully however, that was clever.
