George is a 4th grader boy who feels he is a girl.  Though he considers himself a girl, it is a secret he holds within.  The 4th grade classes are performing Charlotte’s Web as a play ,and he  knows he wants to play charlotte.  He is rejected though, his teacher believing it a joke.  So his best friend Kelly hatches a plan to get him not only playing Charlotte, but finally revealing his secret to his family.
I see how this book could help people having similar issues, or help people to understand transgender children.  For me, it was a bit hard to read.  I felt it was sending mixed messages.  The back cover says “Be who you are”. I feel he isn’t really doing that though.  He even changes his name to Melissa by the end.  I did like how he dealt with the bully however, that was clever.

(2015) The Good, The Bad, and The Barbie .   New York, NY: Penguin Group This nonfiction book tells the story of Barbie and her impact on the world.   The book begins with Barbie’s creator Ruth Handler.   Her parents emigrated from Poland and she was their tenth child, one of the only to be born in America.    At six months she went to live with her 20 year old sister because of a medical condition of her mother’s.   There she stayed and was raised.   She was always a strong, willful person who made it her mission to do what others told her was impossible.   She later moved to Los Angeles with her newly wed husband, Elliot Handler. talking about the birds and the bees

Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press If ever the question is asked, “Where do babies come from?”, this may be the book to reach for.   Topics in this book range from how babies are made, to types of relationships, to sexual abuse. The text is accompanied by diagrams, and pictures.   Two little characters, a bird and a bee, make the journey with you in learning about just that. What I really like about this book is that it tells the facts.   While written at a level that a 7 year old+ can understand, the facts aren’t’ sugar coated.   There are no agendas in this book, religious, political or otherwise.   It often talks about the different ways of doing things, but doesn’t say any are better than others.   It gently tells facts that need to be told, but can be difficult to say.
