Brown Girl Dreaming

Woodson, J. (2014) Brown Girl Dreaming. New York, NY: Penguin
Written in verse, this memoir is about award winning author Jacqueline Woodson’s childhood.  It follows her life from birth to a point in her elementary years.  From the point of view of a child you learn about the civil rights movement, and how it affected people in the North and South.  It covers her young life and her progression as a writer.
I found it interesting to hear about her life in that I could compare it to my own.  Hearing about her childhood in a different time, a different race, and religion really made me think about how my own life could be different.  I listened to the audiobook version of this novel, read by Jaqueline Woodson herself.  She is a good author, but not so much a good reader.  This is something she actually talks about in her book.  I would recommend reading this book rather than listening to it.
