There should be a rule

Today's book is truthfully one I didn't really enjoy, but I can see how others might.

Lord, C. (2008) Rules. New York, NY: Scholastic
Katherine has to deal with all the ordinary teenager problems, but on top of that she has to deal with her autistic brother David.  Her so so-called friend starts to hang out with a boy who likes to make fun of David and she doesn’t want to put up with it.  Katherine starts helping another boy at the therapy center where her brother goes, Jason.  He can’t speak and uses cards to choose his words.  Katherine makes new cards for him and they become friends.  He helps her realize that she doesn’t have to be embarrassed for herself or those with special needs that she cares for.
This book covers a lot of those issues concerning special needs children.  For example, how people treat them especially different, though they might not need to.  It also follows the feelings of those who care for them.  It can help create empathy for those with problems, but even more help kids realize that those with special needs are people like any other.
