Picky Eating is a No-No

This is the last of the Geisel Award and Honor winners!  Hope you enjoyed reading about them

Schneider, J (2011) Tales For Very Picky Eaters. New York, NY: Clarion Books
James is a very picky eater.  He doesn’t want to try what has been given to him to eat.  His father plays it cool though.  James’s father begins to spin a tall tale about the food he want James to eat.  The result: James begrudgingly tries the food.  Eventually James gets so used to these stories he make up his own.  After that he doesn’t seem as reluctant to try the new food.
Never have I heard the origin of oatmeal quite like this.  This book is creative and quite funny.  The illustrations both inside and out visualize the story to a tee.  I especially love the dad’s stories, It reminds me of some of the things I’ve told my own kids…

Hayes, G (2009) Benny and Penny In The Big No-No!. New York, NY: RAW Junior
When Penny joins her brother outside she finds him peeking through the fence trying to see the new kid next door.  They soon decide to go play instead. That’s when Benny finds that his pail is missing.  He sees a pail in the next yard and jumps the fence to take it.  Only after he takes it from the new neighbor, leaving her crying, does he realize his own pail was still in his yard.  He talks it back and the all become friends.
One neat thing about this book is that all the art was drawn in color pencil, which gives a very different look than most modern books.  This story is done in graphic novel style, so it’s a good book for small children who want to read that style of book.
