Get the Wasp Spray!

Oppel, K. (2015) The Nest. New York, NY: Simon & Shuster Books for Young Readers
There is something wrong with the baby.  All the attention goes to its frequent hospital visits and none to Steve.  Steve has a lot of bad dreams, but the one he has that night doesn’t seem so bad.  What he at first describes as an angel tells him it’s all going to be all right.  They are going to fix the baby.  But what he eventually finds out is that they aren’t going to “fix” the baby, they’re going to replace it.  Steven isn’t so sure how he feels about that.
I found this book a bit confusing and a bit depressing.  The constant bad news really kind of gets to you, and the weirdness of his dreams and the wasps makes you unsure of what is real.  By the end most of it becomes clear, and the climax is kind of creepy cool.  One thing I did really like was that instead of numbering the chapters, each would have an increasing number of wasps.
