El Deafo!

Bell, C. (2014) El Deafo. New York, NY: Amulet Books
Cece became deaf from an illness when she was very young.  Though she retained some hearing, without hearing devices she can’t make out anything.  As she grew older, she began to see how different it made her feel from others.  She eventually begins to be able to see past her differences and make some true friends.
This is a book that anyone, deaf or not, can relate to.  Any person has felt the way Cece does and has had to come to terms with something they felt made them stand out.  Most of Cece’s problems in the book are the same for any person.  What makes this even more interesting is that the story is based on the author’s own experiences
