A Cat, an Old Man, a Bear, and a Truck
I'm continuing with the Geisel Award and honor winners today!

Savage, S.(2015) Supertruck.
New York,NY: Roaring Brook Press
The city is full
of trucks. Every truck has its job, and
many more exciting than other. Most jobs
are especially more exciting than that of the garbage truck. When the city gets snowed in though, it’s the
garbage truck that comes to the rescue.
He dons a snow plow and shovels the roads for everyone. Then he goes back to his mild mannered self,
not asking anyone for praise.
Supertruck
sends a heartfelt message about being happy with yourself. Everyone has their place, but anyone can be
awesome. It’s a colorful book and stars
one thing that many you boys love- trucks!
Klassen, J.(2011) I
Want My Hat Back. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press
A bear is
looking for his hat. He asks every animal he comes across if they’ve seen
it. Every animal answers that they
haven’t. One of them is lying though,
and eventually the bear realizes it.
This
is a simple yet funny book. It’s all
told in dialogue, but the way Klassen writes it is unique. Instead of speech balloons, the opposite page
has the dialogue written in different colors.
One color is for the bear, and the other animals in another. It’s a
pretty neat way to do it.
Rylant, C (2014) Mr.
Putter & Tabby: Turn The Page. New York, NY; Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt
Mr. Putter and his
cat, Tabby, love to read. They usually
read quietly and to themselves. When a flyer at the library catches their
attention, they find themselves volunteering to read at “Story Time”. Mr. Putter is excited to read, but becomes
worried that his friend, Mrs. Teaberry, will be a bit too adventurous and ruin
the event.
This story was
enjoyable. It’s always nice to see a
book that encourages further reading.
This one also illustrates the virtue of trusting your friends.
