Never book a one way trip to another world.

Here is the last in my series of 10 graphic novels.  I hope you enjoyed them, I know I did.  Especially Cleopatra in Space and Sparks!.

Kibuishi, K.(2008)  Amulet. New York, NY: Scholastic
After Emily loses her father in a car accident, what’s left of her family move to the country side.  When they get to her mother’s ancestral home, they find it a dirty mess. So they set to work cleaning.  While working on the house Em finds her great grandfather’s study, and there a strange stone set in a necklace.  Something sinister also waits in the house though.  That night her mother gets abducted by a strange creature, and as Em and her brother give chase, they find themselves transported to another world.
I would describe this story as drama for kids.  It has some pretty heavy themes and can be a bit dark (literally) and creepy.  Not so much that the average kid couldn’t handle it though, it just gives it an edge.  There is also some light humor and plenty of adventure. From what I’ve heard at other libraries, it is a pretty popular series. So it seems to be just the kind of book that many kids are interested in.

Maihack, M. (2014) Cleopatra In Space: Book one, Target Practice. New York, NY: Scholastic
Cleopatra, like the average teenager, has no patience for algebra lessons.  So on the day of her 15th birthday she tricks her tutor, ditches her lesson, and runs off to explore ruins with her friend.  While exploring she discovers a strange ruin that transports her to another space and time!  Now on another planet, far in the future, she is greeted by a bunch of talking cats who tell her it’s up to her to save the galaxy!  But first, she has lessons to attend.
Get ready for fun and adventure when reading this book! Right off the bat it drops you in mid-adventure.  Then it backtracks and tells you how you got there.  It’s very good at getting that hook in you that draws you forward.   Exploring tombs on strange worlds, it reminds me of a cross between Indiana Jones and Star Trek.  I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to check out the sequel!
