3 more books worth some looks
Here are 3 more poetry books.
Lewis, J.P.(2012)
If You Were a Chocolate Mustache. Honesdale, PA: Wordsong
If your child is interested in
poetry about soiled park benches, light up toilets, animals, and riddles this
is the book you’re looking for. The entirety of the book is silly poems about
various subjects that children will find funny. As it says in “Bear One, Bear
Two” “Laughter is a magic spell.”
Mathew
Cordell’s illustrations accentuate many of the poems in the collection, helping
to wrestle meaning from the many jumbled silly word sequences. If a child is a fan of Shel Silverstein or
Jack Prelutsky and has already read all their works, then this is their next
stop.
Rosen, M.J. (1996) Food Fight. San Diego, CA: Harcourt Brace & Company
What’s the one
thing everyone needs? Food! Food is the
topic for the poems in this collection.
J. Patrick Luis, Jack Prelutsky, Paul Janeczko and 30 other different
children’s authors lend their poems to this book. Michael Rosen illustrates each one in full
color, creating a very attractive collection
This is a book
of poetry anybody can relate to. The
poems are not just about the foods themselves, but the experiences that go
along with eating them. There are
several types, lengths, and varying degrees of hilarity. The illustrations are lovely and they really
help to accentuate each and every poem.
Ciardi, J. (1962) You
Read To Me, I’ll Read To You. New York, NY: Harper Collins
This book is not
meant for one, but two. In this book
you’ll find poems for an adult to read printed in black ink, and poems for the
child to read printed in blue. The poems
tend to alternate, giving both readers the joy of reading these clever and
funny poems
Reading silly poems by yourself is
fun. Reading them together with someone
else is Super Fun! I read these with my
daughter and we enjoyed every moment.
The poems are witty and the drawings quite expressive. Though this is an older collection; topics
like animals, getting in trouble, daddy being a terrible cook, and dreaming are
timeless.
